Carl and I discovered Lopud Island during our second trip to Dubrovnik back in 2014. In fact, you may remember I wrote a post about it where I shared why I thought Lopud is the perfect day trip from Dubrovnik’s Old Town. During this trip, we only had three days in Dubrovnik and we ended up spending two of those on Lopud Island.
There is no denying that Lopud is a bit more of a hassle to get to than the likes of Lokrum, you have to get the ferry from Port Gruz and it takes about an hour to get there. However, the cost of the ferry is less than half the price of the ten minute ferry ride to Lokrum so it is definitely worth the effort. The thing I love most about Lopud is that it has the best beach in the Dubrovnik. Those of you who have visited Dubrovnik will know that most of the beaches are rocky but Lopud is home to a lovely sandy beach called Sunj (which is pronounced ‘Shoon’ if you were wondering!). There you can rent a sun lounger (also cheaper than Lokrum), order a mojito and relax in the sunshine for a few hours.
Lopud is so much more than just a beach destination though. There are lots of cute shops and bakeries and plenty of places to eat and many people choose to stay there for a few days. Whenever we arrived we always head to one of the bakeries to buy some pastries for breakfast and a couple of sandwiches for later and take them to the beach. There are many quirky things on the island such as the option (for a small fee) of being driven by a golf buggy to Sunj which is at the other side of the island to where ether ferry port is. In my opinion this is definitely recommended over walking as it is mainly uphill and the weather is usually scorchio!
Lopud is such a nice place to relax for a few hours and I would recommend staying for a couple of days if you have the time while you are in Dubrovnik. Have you been to Lopud Island before? Let me know below!
